How to Increase Internet Speed on Windows 10?

There is nothing bad than working on slow internet connection because it wastes a lot of time and also your productivity gets compromised. There are different reasons for slow internet. In most of the cases, your ISP is providing slow speed due to some issues at their end. But, sometimes slow connection can be due to your Windows OS or some computer related problems as well.

Best Tips and Tricks to increase internet speed in Windows 10

  1. Enable the Limit Reservable Bandwidth and Set % to 0

By default, Windows 10 uses 80% of bandwidth, and leave only 20% for the use which slows down the internet browsing. But, the good news is you can override this by enabling the Limit Reservable Bandwidth and setting that to 0.
Below are the steps to do it:
  • Press Windows button + R to open Run, and type in gpedit.msc which will open Group Policy editor.
However, Gpedit.msc comes with only some Windows package, and many don’t have it such as Windows 10 home doesn’t have it. Once gpedit.msc is accessible, then move to the next step.
  • Navigate to Computer Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> Network>> QoS Packet Scheduler. And, then double-click on Limit reservable bandwidth
  • It will open a pop-up window for limiting the reservable bandwidth. Select Enabled. Set the bandwidth limit to 0, and click OK.
That’s it. Now, the reservable bandwidth is free for general use. It boosts the internet speed to a good extent.
  1. Turn off Background Apps

In Windows 10 there are many apps keep on running in the background, and they share your internet bandwidth as well. That slows down your internet connection to a bit. So, the solution is to turn off those background apps and save the bandwidth to get a faster internet connection.
To do this, go to Setting.
Now click on Privacy.
Now, click “background apps” from the left pane. And turn it off.
This will help to save some of your internet bandwidth and improve the internet browsing.
  1. Change to Google Public DNS

This may or may not increase your internet speed because it all depends on the DNS server you are using. If you are using the DNS server which location is quite near to your location, changing it may not help but if your DNS server is situated far away from your location, changing to Google Public DNS would help because it is one of the fastest public DNS which has servers around the world that keep responding to the requests. Your nearest Google’s DNS server will fulfill your requests which results into faster connection because the nearer the server the faster your connection will be.
  1. Disable Windows Updater

Windows update service is not advisable to be disabled since it keeps updating your Windows installation with new updates, but if you are really pissed of your internet connection’s speed, you can disable it to save some more bandwidth that would increase the internet speed.
For this, you have to go to Services which you can type in the taskbar search and click it.
Find Windows Update from the list. Click “Stop”. This will stop this service. Now, double-click “Windows update” to open its properties.
Now its properties window will open.
In the Startup type, select Disabled, and click OK.
Restart the PC now.
  1. Clear Windows Temporary files and Caches

This works for all the versions of Windows. Just go to Setting >> System >> Storage>> Change how we free up space.
Click Clean Now.
Alternatively, you can also try run commands: temp%temp% one by one by typing in the RUN, and hitting enter. Delete the contents that show when you hit enter for both.
  1. Uninstall OneNote App

Windows 10 comes with OneNote app which may or may not be useful for you. If it is useful for you, skip this point. If you are not using it, uninstall this since it uses some of your PC’s internet bandwidth while syncing files and folders.
For uninstallation, type Onenote in the search box of the Taskbar. This will appear there under best match. Now, right click on it and click Uninstall.
  1. Flush DNS

The PC keeps a list of the sites and their IP addresses which we open frequently. These records are maintained in the DNS Resolver Cache. Data becomes obsolete after a long period (few months). So, we can flush the DNS resolver cache to flush out those obsolete data. This can make your connection slow for a while because your PC needs to DNS lookup for every new site. But, very soon you will experience a faster internet connection than what you were experiencing before DNS flushing.
To do this, go to Run, type in cmd, and hit enter. Command Prompt will open.
Now, in the Command Prompt, type ipconfig/flushdns, and hit enter. This will flush the DNS, and you will soon experience faster internet connection.
These are a few ways to increase internet speed on Windows 10. Moreover, there are a few more things you can do such as:
Switch off and on you Wifi Router: Sometimes, just switching off the router, and after 10-20 seconds, restarting again help you increase the speed to a bit.
Disable/Enable the Network Connection: If you are connected through Ethernet cable, then go to Control Panel >> Network and Internet >> Network and Sharing Center. There in the left pane, click Change adapter settings. There you will see the Network Connections. See the one that is connected. Right click on that and click Disable. Then again, right click on that and then click Enable.
At times, this helps improving the internet speed to a bit.
That's all . From these steps your internet speed will boost up somehow.

Popular apps may be sending screenshots of your activity to others

Popular apps may be sending screenshots of your activity to others

Some popular smartphone apps may be secretly taking screenshots of your activity and sending them to third parties, a study has found.

This is particularly disturbing because these screenshots - and videos of your activity on the screen - could include usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, and other important personal information, researchers said.

"We found that thousands of popular apps have the ability to record your screen and anything you type," said David Choffnes, a professor at Northeastern University in the US.

"That includes your username and password, because it can record the characters you type before they turn into those little black dots," said Choffnes.

The study was designed to investigate a persistent urban legend that phones are secretly recording our conversations and then selling that information to companies so they can pepper you with targeted advertisements.

While the researchers found no evidence of recorded conversations, they discovered activity that could be even more dangerous.

"We knew we were looking for a needle in a haystack, and we were surprised to find several needles," said Choffnes.

What they found is that some companies were sending screenshots and videos of user phone activities to third parties. Although these privacy breaches appeared to be benign, they emphasised how easily a phone's privacy window could be exploited for profit.

"This opening will almost certainly be used for malicious purposes," said Christo Wilson, a professor at Northeastern.

"It's simple to install and collect this information. And what's most disturbing is that this occurs with no notification to or permission by users," said Wilson.

"In the case we caught, the information sent to a third party was zip codes, but it could just as easily have been credit card numbers," he said.

The researchers analysed over 17,000 of the most popular apps on the Android operating system, using an automated test programme written by the students.

Although the study was conducted on Android phones, researchers said there is no reason to believe that other phone operating systems would be less vulnerable.

In all, 9,000 of the 17,000 apps had the potential to take screenshots.

"In one case, the app took video of the screen activity and sent that information to a third party," said Wilson.

That app was GoPuff, a fast-food delivery service, which sent the screenshots to Appsee, a data analytics firm for mobile devices. All this was done without the awareness of app users.

Researchers emphasised that neither company appeared to have any nefarious intent. They said that web developers commonly use this type of information to debug their apps and improve the user experience.

However, that does not mean a malicious company could not use this privacy window to steal personal information for profit.

"That has the potential to be much worse than having the camera taking pictures of the ceiling or the microphone recording pointless conversations. There is no easy way to close this privacy opening," said Choffnes.

WPA3 Arrives to Shore Up WiFi Security

wi-fi alliance has introduced wi-fi certified wpa3 to improve security in homes and businesses
Network devices with better security will be hitting the market this year, thanks to Wi-Fi Certified WPA3, which the Wi-Fi Alliance launched Tuesday. The announcement paves the way for the proliferation of devices that support the new, more secure protocol for WiFi communication, which is designed to replace the 14-year-old WPA2.
"WPA3 takes the lead in providing the industry's strongest protections in the ever-changing security landscape," said Wi-Fi Alliance CEO Edgar Figueroa.
The new protocol adds features to simplify WiFi security, enable more robust authentication, and deliver increased cryptographic strength for highly sensitive data markets.
"WPA3 is a welcome and long overdue update from the Wi-Fi Alliance, building and improving on WPA2," said Nick Bilogorskiy, a cybersecurity strategist at Juniper Networks.
While WPA2 has been used for more than a decade, a serious flaw was discovered in it last year, he noted.
"We witnessed a new attack that targeted the four-way handshake of the WPA2 protocol and tricked the victim's device into reusing an already-in-use key," Bilosgorskiy told TechNewsWorld.

Helps Home Nets Resist Attacks

WPA3 also replaces WPA2's flawed Wi-Fi Protected Setup with the Wi-Fi Device Provisioning Protocol.
"That promises a secure method for adding new devices to a network without the need to enter passwords," explained Craig Young, a senior security researcher at Tripwire.
"This mechanism makes use of public key cryptography to identify and authenticate devices, and should close up one of the weakest points in modern WiFi deployments," he told TechNewsWorld.
The new protocol improves the authentication mechanisms in a way that makes home implementations resistant to attack, said James Lerud, head of the behavioral research team at Verodin.
"The protocol is resistant to password-guessing and dictionary attacks," he told TechNewsWorld.
"A key is only valid for a particular session, so if a session is intercepted and the key is compromised, it does not provide access to other sessions or future sessions," Lerud said.
"This implementation also has the benefit of making weak password selection less damaging," he added.

Home and Business Flavors

WPA3 comes in two distinct modes to meet the needs of home and business users.
WPA3-Personal has password-based authentication that's more resilient than WPA2 -- even when users choose passwords that don't meet common complexity recommendations.
It also supports Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE), a secure key protocol that's established between devices to provide stronger protections for users against password-guessing attempts by third parties.
WPA3-Enterprise offers extra protection for networks transmitting sensitive data, such as those used by governments and financial institutions, by supporting the equivalent of 192-bit encryption.
In addition to introducing Wi-Fi Certified WPA3, the Alliance introduced Wi-Fi Certified Easy Connect, a program aimed at reducing the complexity of connecting WiFi devices with limited or no display interface -- such as many devices designed for the Internet of Things -- while maintaining high security standards.
Wi-Fi Easy Connect lets users securely add an interface-challenged device to a network through another device with a better interface, such as a smartphone, by scanning a product quick response (QR) code.
While WPA3 will help with IoT security to an extent, many of the issues with IoT devices are outside the scope of the protocol, Lerud said.
"Default passwords and configurations built without security in mind are still the norms in the IoT space," he noted.

Time to Transition

How long it will take WPA3 devices to supplant the WPA2 installed base remains to be seen. Qualcomm expects to incorporate WPA3 security features into chipsets this summer, starting with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform and continuing to all its WiFi networking infrastructure products.
Nevertheless, it could be years before WPA3 becomes a dominant router protocol.
"Most routers will need a hardware upgrade due to WPA3's encryption requirements," said John Wu, CEO of Gryphon.
"Then there's a new certification process, and client software will need to be rewritten, so it may take a couple of years for wider adoption," he told TechNewsWorld.
"The fact that the protocol is backward-compatible with WPA2, and manufacturers seem on board, makes me think it will happen relatively quick," added Lerud.
Old technologies die slowly, though, he acknowledged. For example, WEP, introduced in 1997, still lingers in the router space.
Despite the security improvements in WPA3, there is no reason for consumers to rush to buy a new router that supports it, said Tripwire's Young.
"Although WPA3 is based heavily on existing technologies, it is quite new, and researchers have not yet had time to poke at the technology for holes," he noted.
"As with any new technology, there will likely be usability and security issues identified in various implementations," he continued. "For now, the best action is probably to keep using a strong WPA2 passphrase with WPS disabled."
